Consumption-driven environmental impact and age structure change in OECD countries: A cointegration-STIRPAT analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines two environmental impacts for which population has a substantial demonstrated influence: transport carbon emissions and residential electricity consumption. It takes as its starting point the STIRPAT framework and disaggregates population into four key age groups: 20-34, 35-49, 50-69, and 70 and older. Population age structure’s influence was significant and varied across cohorts, and its profile was different for two dependent variables. For transport, young adults (20-34) were intensive, whereas the other cohorts had negative coefficients. For residential electricity consumption, age structure had a U-shaped impact: the youngest and oldest cohorts had positive coefficients, while the middle ones had negative coefficients. 1 Victoria University. Causality and Cointegration between Consumption and Gdp in 25 Oecd Countries: Limitations of the Cointegration Approach
A critical review of cointegration is presented in this paper, emphasizing some limitations of this approach to testing causal relations in Econometrics. We present an application of cointegration tests to the relation between Private Consumption and Gross Domestic Product in 25 OECD countries, during the period 1960-97, and the results confirm those limitations and the convenience of giving mo...
متن کاملPopulation, affluence, and environmental impact across development: Evidence from panel cointegration modeling
This paper analyzes urban population’s and affluence’s (GDP per capita’s) influence on environmental impact in developed and developing countries by taking as its starting point the STIRPAT framework. In addition to considering environmental impacts particularly influenced by population and affluence (carbon emissions from transport and residential electricity consumption), the paper determines...
متن کاملEstimating and Forecasting Petroleum Demand in OECD Countries (Gasoline, Jet Fuel and Diesel)
Today, factors such as increasing energy efficiency, use of alternative fuels, and application of new fuel standards and new environmental laws in OECD countries have led to wide-range of changes in the structure of demand for fossil fuels. Given the importance of light derivatives, namely gasoline, jet fuel and diesel in the demand basked of OECD countries we focus on these products. We use ...
متن کاملWorld Energy Outlook : a Comparative Study
Differen world energy outlook with different horizons (2035, 2040 and 2050) show that demand for primary energy will increase. The energymix in 2050 will mainly be fossil based although the share of theses fuels will decrease. Accorging to some forecasts, energy consumption will increase more than 50 percent during next 30 years which most of this growth belongs to non-OECD countries. In supply...
متن کاملThe nexus of renewable energy - sustainable development - environmental quality in Iran: Bayesian VAR approach
The use of renewable energy reduces environmental pollution and leads to achievement of sustainable development. The current study investigates the dynamic interrelationship between sustainable development, renewable and non-renewable energies and environment nexus by applying Bayesian vector autoregression (BVAR) and impulse response functions in Iran with an annual data frequency for the time...
